• Select Gear Corporate Social Responsibility partnership is making a difference.

    May 26th, 2010:

Select Gear and Coaches across Continents have developed a unique Corporate Social Responsibility partnership to provide soccer equipment to our programs in Uganda and nearby countries.

Already in 2010, children in Nairobi, Eastlands and Kibera plus children in Oyugis and Kisumu have received Select Gear uniforms as part of the Coaches across Continents initiatives to teach life skills through football.

“Here in the United States, we are so fortunate to have well organized soccer programs with great facilities and equipment,” says Phil Holdsworth, general manager of Varsity Soccer. “We saw a great opportunity to get involved with a highly respected and award winning humanitarian program that uses soccer as a platform to enrich the lives of at-risk young people throughout Africa. We are proud to expand our relationship with Coaches Across Continents by becoming a key partner in this new Uganda initiative.”

According to Holdsworth, the partnership will allow American players to become more personally connected to the difficult circumstances young people face in Africa. “We see an opportunity to link our club, school and college programs to the CaC programs throughout the continent, and specifically in Uganda. Particularly with eyes of the world focused on Africa as we await the start of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, we hope to provide a vehicle for members of our partner organizations to get directly involved in the lives of African children who have and continue to face great hardships.”

The Select Gear uniforms are part of the Coaches across Continents Hat-Trick Initiatives that create locally owned and sustainable programs by educating teachers, coaches and volunteers how to use football for social development. This Award Winning not for profit now runs programs in 18 communities in 7 countries.

In 2010 CaC will more than triple in size and serve over 90,000 children in some of the world’s most disadvantaged communities. We will leverage 16,800+ hours (equaling $386,000+) of volunteer time (coaches, medical students, professional footballers, etc…. who will travel to the countries to teach CaC’s curriculum and work in communities), and create sustainable programs that change kids’ lives.

Coaches across Continents Board Member, Seamus Malin comments that, ” The partnership with the whole Select Gear family, their corporation and staff and all the Select Gear teams in the US is having a huge benefit for children and communities throughout Africa. In June we start the first ever Hat-Trick Initiative partnership in Uganda, working with former child soldiers and orphans and being able to provide the communities with soccer equipment helps to create a sustainable and locally owned program.”
