• Going The Extra Mile to Combat COVID-19

We are delighted to be extending our partnership with Bloomberg Extra Mile in China and Japan. Due to the global COVID-19 pandemic Bloomberg’s Square Mile Relays, held in cities around the world, were canceled for 2020. Instead they have switched to virtual races and challenges with a portion of the money raised going to local charities in each location as part of The Extra Mile initiative. Coaches Across Continents, working with local partners, is The Extra Mile partner in Beijing, Shanghai and Tokyo.

We will be using our adaptable COVID-19 curricula to address physical activity, disease prevention, and mental-well-being in each city. CAC will train local coaches and leaders in using the curricula and cover topics of relevance to their communities. Following this training the local coaches in each city will deliver year-round programming in schools and communities with at-risk youth. This programming will ideally be in-person but is adaptable to online if required by national guidelines.

We also currently work with Bloomberg Extra Mile and Football United in Sydney. In addition CAC has previously delivered Extra Mile programming in Beijing and Tokyo. We are honored to be supported by Bloomberg to address COVID-19 in multiple countries.

  • CAC & Football United Going The Extra Mile

March 20th 2020. Although the Bloomberg Square Mile Relay Sydney has been postponed for 2020 the race runners are still selecting an Extra Mile program to support in 2020. This week they are selecting one of three ’causes’ to support that have a specific focus on public health with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The 3 causes are mental health, physical activity and healthy living including hygiene. This program, once selected, will be delivered by CAC partner Football United, supported by CAC. We are disappointed to not be able to be on the ground in Sydney during this fun event but are delighted Bloomberg are still going The Extra Mile with Football United and CAC again in 2020.

This is our 3rd consecutive year working with Bloomberg as The Extra Mile partner in Sydney. Over the past 12 months the Football United program has effectively delivered school based programs which promote social inclusion and community cohesion, as selected by the 2019 race runners. We have also worked with Bloomberg on this initiative in Tokyo in 2018 and Beijing in 2019.

  • Happiness With Bloomberg in Beijing

We are delighted to have been selected as The Extra Mile partner for Bloomberg Square Mile Relay Beijing, China 2019. The Beijing Square Mile Relay runners selected ‘Happiness’ as the winning cause to which Bloomberg funding should be distributed.

Using this funding, Coaches Across Continents and WeDoSports trained Chinese coaches are currently delivering ‘Football for Happiness’ programming using our Purposeful Play curriculum in Beijing. ┬áThe key focus of the curriculum, in addition to Fun/Happiness, is teaching social skills like teamwork, communication, while also focusing on inclusion and participation for all students. Football for Happiness is being delivered by the coaches in 3 Beijing schools to 6 classes of 30-40 students. The programming is fully inclusive with all class members participating (boys and girls, all abilities, etc).

We are excited to be able to work with Bloomberg Extra Mile in Beijing in addition to our work with them in Sydney and Tokyo.

    About the Extra Mile

The Extra Mile helps participants of the Bloomberg Square Mile Relay contribute to their city in a bigger, better way.

When you run in the Bloomberg Square Mile Relay, you take part in The Extra Mile simply by running for a cause you care about. The faster you run, the better the chance your cause has of receiving the donation.

Each cause in The Extra Mile is selected with a local organisation that is using the power of sport and physical activity to address social challenges in the race city. 25% of your race fee goes to this partner, which will deliver solutions around the winning cause over a year-long program.
